Everything I Learned From Gilmore Girls

Updated: May 17, 2020

This week, I finished the last episode of Gilmore Girls. It's been a very difficult time in my life.

Just kidding. But I really did love Gilmore Girls! It's not a perfect show, but it's cleaner than most adult shows you'll find and I completely fell in love with it. Rory and Lorelai's relationship, the quirky characters of Stars Hollow, Rory's determination...

Today I thought it would be fun to round up a list of all the important life lessons we've learned from Gilmore Girls!

#1: Study Hard

Aw, Rory from Season 1. What would Gilmore Girls have been like without Rory's determination to get into an Ivy League? She taught us that being smart is cool and you have to work hard and study harder to get what you want.

#2: Work Hard, Drink Coffee

If you're going to be studying Rory Gilmore style, you're going to need caffeine. Take a page from our favorite Gilmore girls and grab a cup.

#3: Always Be Prepared

Rory Gilmore was a big reader. Bus books, school books, lunch books, school dance books...she was always prepared. Need some book inspiration? Check out our book lists or Rory Gilmore's Official Reading List.

#4: Grab Some Food Too

If you're working as hard as these Gilmore girls, you're going to need some sustenance with that coffee! If Gilmore Girls taught us anything, it's how to eat. Grab a taco, diner burger, french fries, or all of the above.

#5: Friendship is Important

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Rory didn't exactly think Paris was best friend material when she first spotted her. Friends like Lane, Sookie, Michel, Paris, and Luke made the show what it was, even if they did drive Rory and Lorelai a little bit batty sometimes.

#6: Life Doesn't Always Go According to Plan

Remember when Mr. Huntzberger told Rory she wasn't a good reporter? Things won't always go like you want them to, so just keep your head up and don't let criticism get you too down. And please: don't steal a yacht.

#7: So Sometimes You Just Have to Jump

Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, even if that isn't quite as literal as the instance above. So don't be afraid to take risks and get a little messy.

#8: You'll Be Embarrassed Sometimes

Just have as much fun with it as Lorelai eventually did in the fashion show.

#9: And Heartbroken Other Times

Admit it, you probably cried when Rory broke up with Dean. Or when Paris didn't get into Harvard or Christopher left Lorelai.

#10: But Your Mom Always Has Your Back

Rory and Lorelai's relationship is the real lesson of Gilmore Girls. They weren't perfect, but they loved each other and had a lot of fun. So go hug your momma!
